Alitalia, Lufthansa’s interest if opportunity arises to take over troubled Italian airline

BERLIN (Reuters) – If there was a chance to create a new Alitalia Lufthansa, it would be interesting, said  MD of the major German carrier Carsten Spohr, a few days after the deadline for binding bids to find a buyer for the company.
The Italian government has said it favors a block sale of Alitalia even if the tender also includes separate bids for flight and handling activities.

Recently Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda ruled out that the government intends to put more public money on the company in crisis.
The Alitalia situation is very complicated. For me there is a priority: I do not want Italian citizens to put waste more money, “said the minister.

German carrier finance manager Ulrik Svensson said in August that Lufthansa was interested in the Italian aviation market, but that he was not prepared to find the Italian company in crisis in its current state.
“Alitalia for today is not a topic to discuss, but if there was an opportunity to create a new Alitalia then Lufthansa as the number one in Europe would be interested,” said Spohr.

Alitalia’s binding offers may be submitted by October 16th.
In an article by The Messenger, it is said that, in addition to Lufthansa, other bidders with an offer are EasyJet and Cerberus, but only interested in the aviation side.

A source says that Etihad is still interested in Alitalia.
Alitalia has not commented and there is still no reaction from potential bidders.
