Mourning in the music world: Johnny Hallyday died last night at the age of 74. About a year ago the rockstar idol of generations of French had been diagnosed with lung cancer. To announce it, just before three o’clock in the morning, it was his wife Laeticia. “Johnny is gone, I write these words without being able to believe them, my man is gone,” writes the woman.

“Johnny left us tonight as he lived throughout his life, with courage and dignity,” continues the artist’s wife.

The monumental singer of French music had been hospitalized on the night between Sunday and Monday for respiratory problems. For months he had undergone an anti-cancer treatment in Paris. Several times the family had tried to deny the alarmist rumors spread by some media.

The protagonist of a career of 55 years and over a thousand songs and sales of 100 million records, Hallyday had recently declared that he wanted to prepare a new studio album with a summer tour in 2018. Despite the disease, which he announced in March 2017, he maintained his commitment to sing on tour with the Vieilles Canailles in the summer, along with the historic friends and singers Jacques Dutronc and Eddy Mitchell. That will remain his last appearance on the circuit.
